General Meeting Monday 27th October 2025
1.00pm Mead Hall, Flinders Street Baptist Church, 65 Flinders Street Adelaide
Our speaker this month will be fellow member Alex Gardini who will speak on “Multiculturism and its impact on Australian Society. ”
After finishing his teaching career, Alex became a Lecturer in the History of Science and Technology at the former South Australian Institute of Technology. Whilst there, he was appointed as a Member of a Committee into the Teaching of Migrant Languages in Schools. He was involved with the formation of 5EBI and advocating for the teaching of Italian in schools. In 1977, Alex was asked to apply for the position of Ethnic Affairs Adviser to Don Dunstan, the then Premier. This role changed following the election when the Tonkin Liberal Government was elected. The Liberal government created the Ethnic Affairs Commission and Alex’s role became more of a policy one. His focus extended to one of integrating cultural groups into Australian society. He continued to support ethnic broadcasters (5 EBI) and was involved in the establishment of the Migration Museum. Alex’s policy role involved writing papers about multiculturalism. His approach was to encourage integration rather than the creation of ghettos.
